Mountaineering is an inherently dangerous activity. Climbing Mount Rainier involves significant and unavoidable risks of serious injury, permanent disability, and death. These risks include, but are not limited to: falls from height; falls into crevasses; avalanches; rockfall and icefall; extreme cold and hypothermia; frostbite; altitude sickness including Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE), and High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE); sudden and severe weather changes; equipment failure; navigation errors; and the physical and mental demands of high-altitude mountaineering. No amount of preparation, training, gear, or guidance can eliminate these risks.
This book is provided solely for informational and educational purposes. It is not a substitute for professional mountaineering instruction, guided experience, formal training courses, or the judgment of certified climbing guides and park rangers. Reading this book does not qualify any person to climb Mount Rainier or any other mountain. The techniques, routes, gear recommendations, itineraries, and personal experiences described herein reflect the author's individual experience and opinions at the time of writing and may not apply to your situation, skill level, physical condition, or the conditions present on the mountain when you climb.
Conditions on Mount Rainier change constantly. Glaciers move. Crevasses open and close. Routes shift from season to season and sometimes from week to week. Weather windows open and slam shut without warning. Information in this book, including route descriptions, campsite details, permit procedures, fees, and safety guidance, may become outdated, incomplete, or inaccurate. Always consult current National Park Service (NPS) climbing rangers, official park publications, and certified guide services before planning or attempting any climb.

By reading this book and/or attempting any climb described herein, you expressly acknowledge that you climb entirely at your own risk and that you alone are responsible for your decisions, preparation, equipment, training, and safety.
Before attempting to climb Mount Rainier, you must: (1) obtain all required permits and pay all required fees; (2) receive proper mountaineering training from qualified instructors, including glacier travel, crevasse rescue, self-arrest, navigation, and altitude awareness; (3) achieve a level of physical fitness appropriate to the demands of the climb; (4) consult with park rangers regarding current conditions; (5) carry appropriate equipment in good working order; and (6) make conservative decisions that prioritize the safety of yourself and your team over summit ambitions.
If you are not prepared to accept full personal responsibility for the risks of mountaineering, do not climb Mount Rainier. The mountain will still be there when you are ready. Turning around is always an option. Summiting is never worth a life.
