Safety and Emergency Procedures
A. Hazard Awareness and Risk Management
Hazard awareness on Rainier is continuous work: crevasses, rockfall, avalanche, weather, and team-member incapacitation. Identify, mitigate, reassess. The PLETT/CRM framework in Chapter VI is not chapter decoration. Run it at the trailhead, at high camp, and before you descend.
Group communication and decision-making fail more climbs than bad boots. Make space for the quiet climber to speak. Leaders who only want good news will eventually get a bad surprise.
Revisit the full PLETT framework in Chapter VI before every summit bid. Run it out loud as a team. Silence is not agreement.
B. First Aid and Emergency Response
Wilderness first aid is not optional knowledge. Know how to manage bleeding, fractures, hypothermia, frostbite, and altitude emergencies at a basic level. Carry a kit you have opened before the emergency. Improvisation helps; training helps more.
Evacuation on Rainier may involve self-rescue, assisted descent, ranger response, or helicopter. Know how to call for help, what information to provide, and how to keep a patient warm and secure while you wait. Self-reliance is the first line; professional rescue is the backup, not the plan A for poor decisions.
Emergency communication devices, such as a PLB, inReach, or phone where there is signal, are backups, not plans. Know how to describe your location using landmarks and GPS coordinates. Know your party's size, injuries, and immediate hazards before you press the button. Rescuers are extraordinary; do not make their job harder with panic and incomplete information.
Hypothermia management starts before the obvious shiver stage: feed, hydrate, add layers, block wind, and reduce exposure time in places like the Icebox. A climber who "just wants to push a little more" while stopping to fumble zippers every fifty feet may already be in trouble. Leaders watch patterns, not just statements.
If you are the injured or ill climber, your job is honesty. Minimize nothing that affects the team's risk. Machismo is not a treatment plan. The register on Columbia Crest does not need your name more than your family needs you home.
Scenario thinking beats optimism. Ask in camp: What if one climber cannot continue above the cleaver? What if we lose visibility on the snowfield? What if a crampon binding fails? What if someone shows ataxia? You will not script every future. You will reduce the number of first-time decisions you must make while hypoxic.
Documentation after an incident matters for learning: what happened, what time, what decisions, what gear, what weather. Even near-misses deserve a debrief when everyone is warm and fed. Teams that never debrief repeat expensive lessons.
Insurance, travel plans, and emergency contacts should be handled before Paradise. Tell someone outside the park your plan and check-in time. If you do not check in, they should know who to call. This is unromantic and essential.
If you ever need rescue, cooperate fully, tell the truth, and accept that the story of your climb has changed genres. The goal becomes survival and extraction, not narrative satisfaction. Rangers and pilots are not supporting characters in your memoir. They are professionals entering hazard because a human needs help.
Carry patient assessment basics in your head: airway, breathing, circulation, disability, exposure. Keep a written first aid reference in the kit because stress makes memory slippery. Practice gloves-on first aid tasks once before the trip. Scissors, tape, and cold fingers are a trio that deserves rehearsal.
Search and Rescue (National Park Service)

The Disappointment Cleaver averages three major Search and Rescue (SAR) events and one fatality per year. Accidents occur due to a wide range of reasons on this route. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE), other respiratory issues, and cold exposure injuries are the most prevalent, but falling on icy terrain as well as contact with rock (whether from falling into or being hit from above) are also common. Often poor decision making and overconfidence in climbers' ability to handle poor weather are major contributing factors to climbing accidents on this route as well.
The NPS does not charge for search and rescue services. However, if private ambulances and air ambulances are required, fees are rapidly accrued. A large portion of the climbing cost recovery fee goes toward preparing for search and rescue incidents by hiring, equipping, and training climbing rangers. Rescues that result in a cost of more than five hundred dollars in overtime for personnel or in helicopter costs are not paid for by Mount Rainier funds. The National Park Service maintains a contingency account held regionally to pay for unprogrammed costs such as SAR.
The park has a staffed contract exclusive-use helicopter on duty each day between May 15 and September 15. However, due to funding and other cost saving measures, the helicopter must be assigned out on regional wildfires and other incidents and projects. Nevertheless, since the inception of this exclusive use contract, the time it takes to get the helicopter to the incident base has decreased from 2–4 hours to 1–3 hours, depending on the location of the helicopter at the time of the incident. In addition, this exclusive use helicopter also has a dedicated crew who know the capabilities of the helicopter and thus operate it more safely.
