A. Day-by-Day Itinerary
What follows is a real team itinerary pattern I have used and refined. Dates shift; the bones stay the same. Adjust for your permit, weather, and team, but do not invent a shorter version that skips rest and skills.
July 17–18 (Wednesday/Thursday): Rent gear from Seattle REI. Stay up late packing and repacking as you attempt to fit everything into one pack. Try on said pack and realize it is way too heavy, so you repack, again. Stay at Whittaker's Bunkhouse in Ashford, WA (about 25 minutes from Paradise). Arrive no later than early afternoon. Group gear is distributed. Team meeting on weather and route.
July 19 (Friday): Wake 5:00 a.m., depart 6:00 a.m. Paradise parking lot (5,400 ft) at 7:00 a.m. Two stops: Pebble Creek for water and lunch. Everyone leaves Pebble Creek with no less than five liters of water. Arrive Camp Muir mid-afternoon. Rope up, dress for colder conditions, continue to Ingraham Flats (11,100 ft). Set up camp. Melt water. Rest. The first night is exhausting and most climbers feel the altitude.
July 20 (Saturday): Rest and acclimatize. Crevasse rescue practice. Rope travel practice. General mountaineering discussion. Cook dinner. Fill water bottles. Bed at 6:00 p.m. Earplugs recommended: tents on a glacier are not quiet when someone is melting snow at 9:00 p.m., and someone always is.
July 21 (Sunday, Summit Day): Depart Ingraham Flats 12:00–1:00 a.m. Disappointment Cleaver route (or Ingraham Direct if conditions allow). Evaluation at top of DC. Summit team continues. Summit approximately 5:00–7:00 a.m. (I have watched sunrise from the summit, worth every miserable minute of the dark). Sign summit book, photos, 20–30 minutes on top. Return to Ingraham Flats (2–3 hours), collect gear, return to Paradise (2–3 hours). First climber at Paradise ~3:00–4:00 p.m. This is a very long day, with nearly 13,000 feet of elevation change traveled. This is one of the reasons Mt. Rainier is considered the hardest mountain in the lower 48.
July 22 (Monday): Return gear to REI. Rest. Bask in the glory of your successful summit, or the quieter glory of a smart turnaround. Both are legitimate endings to a well-run climb.
Team culture notes for the itinerary: assign roles before Ashford: navigation lead, stove lead, first aid lead, turnaround timekeeper. Rotate heavy group gear. Agree that any climber can call a stop for safety without being mocked. Psychological safety is a piece of technical equipment. Pack it.
On Friday's approach, protect the team from the classic mistake of racing to high camp as if arrival time were a trophy. Early arrival that wrecks half the team is not a win. Steady arrival with appetite and humor intact is a win.
On Saturday, skills practice should be short, focused, and real: rope spacing drill, a haul system refresh, a self-arrest review on a safe slope if conditions allow. Then rest. The urge to over-train at high camp is strong in anxious climbers. Channel anxiety into packing the summit bag and melting water, not into exhausting heroics.

Tips During the Ascent
The Rest Step: Plant the uphill foot, lock the rear knee, breathe one or two times, then step. This is not optional above 12,000 feet. It is how you buy oxygen with geometry.
Pressure Breathing: Exhale forcefully as if blowing out a candle; this forces CO2 out and draws more O2 in. Use it with the rest step. It feels theatrical until it becomes the only thing keeping you moving.
Pace: A sustainable pace is a pace you could hold for eight hours. Many climbers start too fast on the Muir Snowfield because they are excited and the day hikers are watching. The mountain will find you. Start slower than your ego wants.
Rope Team Communication: Pre-agree on tugs: one tug = stop; two tugs = check-in; three tugs = emergency. In wind, voice communication becomes impossible above certain speeds. Practice the system at high camp before you need it in the Icebox.
Headlamp Management on Summit Night: Keep spare batteries in your chest pocket against your body. Cold kills batteries. A dark rope team on a glacier is a preventable failure.
Managing Crevasse Fear: Reasonable fear of crevasses is healthy. Paralyzing fear is not. Trust your rope team, trust your spacing, keep the rope taut, and move with purpose. Staring into every slot will not make the glacier safer; good technique will.
Mental Management: Divide the climb into sections, not into vertical feet. Reach the next wand. Reach the next rest point. Do not think about the summit until you are at the DC. Then think about the summit.
"The Wall": Every climber hits a moment, usually between 12,000 and 13,000 feet, where they want to stop. This is normal. This is the altitude and the fatigue talking. Unless you have symptoms of AMS, this is not your body telling you to stop; it is your mind doing what minds do. This is where the real climb begins.
Author's Note: At 13,000 feet I have negotiated with myself every time. 'Just to the next wand.' 'Just to that rock.' 'Just five more rest steps.' I have never once regretted not stopping.
Layer management on the move: vent early. If you wait until you are soaked, you will freeze at the next stop. Zipper discipline is a climbing skill. So is eating on short breaks instead of waiting for a perfect lunch terrace that does not exist above 12,000 feet.
Cold hands are a systems problem: core heat, glove system, and stopping too long in wind. Swing arms, protect bottles, and speak up before dexterity is gone. Frostbite timelines are shorter than arguments about whether you "should" be cold.
If a teammate is fading, address it early with food, water, layer check, and honest assessment, not cheerleading alone. Encouragement without calories is just noise. Sometimes the kindest leadership is a clear turnaround.
Summit-night timeline example that many teams approximate: 11:00 p.m. wake, forced breakfast, dress, harness, rope; 12:00–1:00 a.m. depart; steady movement through cold hours; cleaver in the dark or first light depending on pace; assessment; upper mountain in growing light; summit 5:00–7:00 a.m.; descend before the snow becomes a slide and the rockfall lottery worsens. Your times will differ. Your need for a margin will not.
If you are behind the timeline at the cleaver assessment, the mountain is giving you information. "We can still make it" is not a plan if it requires everyone to become a different athlete in the next two hours. Turnaround times exist because descent also takes time, and daylight and weather are not impressed by your commitment.
Rope team order is a leadership tool. Often a strong navigator leads, a steady climber goes middle, and an experienced climber goes last to manage the rope and watch the team. Adjust for the humans you actually have, not the textbook diagram. Revisit order if someone is struggling.
There is a particular silence that falls over a rope team in the hour before departure on summit night. Zippers. Soft curses at stubborn glove liners. The hiss of a bottle being filled from a pot. Someone laughing at nothing. Someone not laughing at all. Leaders should move through that silence with calm competence, not forced cheer. Calm is contagious. So is frantic energy.
If you vomit from altitude, the climb is not automatically over, but the conversation has changed. Hydrate if you can keep fluids down, assess progression of symptoms, and be willing to end the bid. There is a macho script that treats vomiting as a funny badge. I am not interested in that script. I am interested in brains that still work on the descent.
Rope team pacing conflicts are normal. The correct resolution is almost never go faster to satisfy the anxious strong climber. It is almost always find a sustainable team pace and use rest step discipline. Strong climbers can carry a bit more group weight. They should not be allowed to tow the team into an aerobic hole.
B. Skills and Techniques During the Ascent
Glacier travel is a team sport. Maintain spacing. Keep the rope taut enough to catch a fall without yanking partners off their feet on every step. Cross snow bridges one at a time when the leader calls it. Probe when uncertain. Never assume yesterday's bridge is today's bridge.
Crevasse field navigation demands attention more than heroics. Follow the marked route. Watch the climber ahead. Communicate hazards. If you are the leader, your job is route and pace; if you are in the middle or rear, your job is rope management and constant awareness of the person in front and behind.
Self-arrest must be reflexive. Practice on a safe training slope until the motion lives in your body. Crampon technique changes with the surface: firm neve rewards confident edge use; soft afternoon snow demands patience and flat-footing; rock demands care so you do not lever a point and twist an ankle, or send rock onto the team below.
Crevasse rescue: know how to go from fall to anchor to haul. Two pulleys, prusiks, and anchors per the team plan are not theoretical gear. If your team cannot describe the rescue sequence out loud at high camp, you are not ready to leave high camp.
Snow bridge protocol worth repeating: the leader probes and decides; the team watches rope and stance; only one climber is on the questionable feature at a time when that is the safe call. If you do not like the bridge, say so. Silence has walked people into holes.
On mixed rock with crampons, shorten your stride, keep weight over your feet, and accept that you will look awkward. Looking smooth is not the metric. Not falling and not knocking rock are the metrics.
C. Safety Considerations
Avalanche awareness matters even on standard summer routes, especially shoulder season and after storms. Know the forecast. Recognize wind-loaded slopes and recent debris. Carry and know how to use beacon, probe, and shovel when conditions warrant. Summer does not abolish snow science.
Altitude illness: recognize AMS, HAPE, and HACE early. Descend when symptoms progress. Do not leave a sick climber alone. Do not "see how it goes" with ataxia or confusion. Those are descent criteria, not debate topics.
When to turn around: agree on a mandatory turnaround time before leaving camp. Honor team-member symptoms. Honor weather deterioration. The summit does not get safer because you want it more.
The following risk-management framework is used by climbing rangers and adapted from Crew Resource Management. Preserve it. Use it.
PLETT Risk Management Framework (NPS / CRM)
There is nothing "safe" about mountaineering, however we can manage and mitigate risks by equipping and training sufficiently as well as making reasonable decisions. Real advancements in mountaineering safety won't come from more specialized equipment, it's the study of human behavior and heuristics that offer more substantial gains for parties trying to manage their risk.
The US Coast Guard (USCG), often looked to as one of the United States' most respected rescue resources, has developed a system of risk mitigation called Crew Resource Management (CRM). The National Park Service has recently adopted a very close derivative of this. The USCG identified the core common denominators of tragedies, injuries, and near-misses that occurred during rescue operations. In one of its applications, CRM asks you to compare and assess your intended action to these common denominators and see how well your plan of action stacks up, then asks you to either fill the gaps or refuse the risk and discontinue the activity.
If you have no other framework of risk assessment and management, then try this one. The climbing rangers use it and have had great success even conducting simple and mundane operations. Use this framework to have the conversation within your group the night before you climb.
(P)lanning
What is the overall plan? Departure time? Turnaround time? Return time? Predict expected mountaineering methods. Contingency plan for a sick climber (even if it's within yards of the summit)? Does someone outside the park know your plan?
(L)eadership
What is the leadership structure in your group? Even on an independent summit attempt, we recommend identifying a leader. Many groups seem to be unwilling to do this, but this simple act can make the difference.
(E)quipment
Do you have the correct equipment (ex. 2 pulleys, 2 prusiks, 2 anchors / person for crevasse rescue)? What happens if a climber on your team loses their pack, their gloves, their sunglasses?
(T)raining
Has everyone been trained to employ the skills needed for the activity? (Cramponing, team arrest, belaying, crevasse rescue)
(T)eam fitness
Are the right team members present? Do all feel up to the task? Is everyone in a healthy mental and physical state? Don't ascend with signs of AMS.
(C)ommunication
How shall we communicate? What if the party must split up? (not recommended!) Do we have cell phones, group radios, PLBs, or SPOT devices? How's the communication comfort level in the group? Are the less-experienced climbers able to share their concerns? Are the experienced climbers listening and providing valid reassurance?
(C)onditions
What are the (snow and weather) conditions now? What is the forecast? Do we have reasonable margins of safety? Are we within our skill and equipment levels? What are the weather trigger points for turning around? Is your team able to assess avalanche conditions, and if not will you attempt to climb anyways?
(C)omplexity
Are we trying to do "too much" with the resources (gear, training, skill) we have? What are our trigger points (weather, team, snow conditions, leadership, equipment) for turning back?
We recommend performing this risk management activity at natural breaks during the course of your trip, for example, 1) at the initial planning phases on the phone with your friends a few days before your climb, 2) at the trailhead before your packs are on, 3) at high camps the night before your climb, and 4) before you head down the mountain.
Encourage group participation. Lesser experienced team members may be silent in front of experienced and respected individuals. Reach out specifically to these silent team members. The discussion will pay off in spades.
